Cessna Owners Safety Warning You are probably already aware of the serious problem that exists with the operation of Cessna Seat latches. Through a combination of poor design, worn parts, lack of proper service, or just plain misuse and abuse, pilots have found themselves suddenly in the back seat with no way to reach the controls At the very least, this could result in a few anxious moments during taxiing. If a failure should occur during rotation on the takeoff run, it can, and has ended up with the tragic death of the pilot and occupants. The development of the Aerostop seat lock came about as the result of fellow 180/185 pilots using the Cessna "Cargo Clamps" as a backup devise for "Extra Peace of Mind". While probably not officialy intended by Cessna to be used as such, it does effectively restrict the rearward motion of the seat. In fact, so much that it is very difficult to enter and exit the aircraft, such precious time could be wasted in an emergency situation requiring a fast exit. Aerostop Seat Lock was designed to allow full seat travel for normal entry and exit. A powerful cam locks to the seat track when firm hand pressure is applied. The cam angle is such that any rearward force from the set causes it to lock tighter, yet it can be released by pulling up the lever. NO MECHANICAL DEVICE IS 100% FAILSAFE. Aerostop seat lock is not intended or designed to be the primary locking devise for your seat. This devise is not a fix for worn or improperly maintained original equipment seat tracks and latches. Aerostop seat lock is intended to be a backup device for the same reason our engines are equipped with two magnetos - an extra margin of safety by added redundancy. You know as well as I that having two magnetos is not a guarantee that they cannot both fail during the same flight. However, through maintenance and safe operating procedures we can greatly reduce risk. Remember, you as the pilot in command, must accept the responsibility for the safe operation of the aircraft that you fly. WARNING!! It is recommended that you add to your check list to reach back and check for proper positioning of the Aerostop seat lock before take off and landing. Also please be sure your passengers are instructed as to the operation of the Aerostop seat locks for safety reasons. Also warn passengers not to interfere with the operation of the Aerostop seat lock. Instruct them to avoid kicking the handle as it could dislodge it from it's proper location.
